The Witness

I have now encountered enough versions of this story that I am beginning to suspect it is a pattern.(1)

Someone discovers Sleep Token.

A few months later they are:

  • in therapy

  • sober

  • journaling

  • making art again

  • exercising

  • grieving something they had been avoiding

  • finally admitting that the thing they thought was normal was, in fact, not

This is not universal. It is not even necessarily common.
But it happens often enough that people keep noticing it.(2)

Which raises an awkward question–
Why?

Not:
Why do people like Sleep Token?

That question has already been asked to death.

I mean:
Why do so many people describe the band as a catalyst?(3)

Because there is an equally persistent counter-pattern.

For every person who credits the music with helping them confront something difficult, there is another person who reacts to the band with a level of hostility that seems disproportionate to the crime of making atmospheric songs about feelings.

==People do not merely dislike Sleep Token.
Many seem compelled to announce that they dislike Sleep Token.==

Which is different.
(And a little strange.)

Most bands produce fans. Critics, even.

This band appears to produce testimony.

Positive testimony.
Negative testimony.

But testimony all the same.

I am beginning to wonder if the answer has less to do with the songs themselves and more to do with what the songs refuse to do.

They rarely resolve. They rarely explain. They rarely tell the listener what to think. Contradictions remain contradictions. Questions remain questions.

The speaker is often unstable. The meaning shifts depending on where you stand.

For some people, this creates room. Room to think; to feel. Room to recognize something they did not previously have words for.

For others, it creates frustration. The ambiguity that one listener experiences as freedom may be experienced by another as absence. The same uncertainty that helps one person explore may feel intolerable to someone looking for answers.

Perhaps that is why so many stories associated with this band are stories of self-discovery. Not because the music provides solutions. Because it rarely does. Instead, it seems to provide recognition.

A witness.

A place to stand while the answer is still forming.

I do not have a conclusion. I have an observation. This keeps happening.

And at a certain point, things that keep happening become difficult to ignore.
