The Madwoman
realizing the direction has changed
The thing that caught me wasn't the crawling.
It was who was doing it.
In Provider, the movement belongs to him.
He crawls up on me. Builds the web. Wraps the silk. Narrates the entire thing while pretending I had more input than I probably did.
Then Descending arrives and suddenly the sentence has flipped.
You come crawling back to me.
Somewhere between those songs, the direction changes.
And I hate how much that matters.
Because now the return belongs to me.
Not the spider.
Not the web.
Me.
The trap stops feeling like something happening to me and starts feeling like a place I know how to find.
That's considerably more uncomfortable.
Because if I know the route by heart, eventually I have to stop blaming the map.
The Scholar
tracking the reversal of agency
The connection between Provider and Descending is not the act of crawling itself.
It is the transfer of movement.
Provider repeatedly frames the speaker as the active force within the dynamic. The speaker approaches, constructs, wraps, provides, and defines. The subject is encouraged to view that process as mutual participation.
Descending reverses the orientation.
You come crawling back to me.
The speaker is no longer described as pursuing.
The return is assumed.
This creates a significant shift in agency. The dynamic no longer depends on seduction, persuasion, or construction. The path already exists.
Provider establishes the route.
Descending assumes familiarity with it.
The result is a relationship that feels less like capture and more like recurrence.
The listener is not being shown the way.
The listener already knows it.
The Witness
noticing that everyone keeps crawling for some reason
I regret to inform you that this appears to be a pattern.
In Provider, somebody crawls up on somebody. In Descending, somebody crawls back.
At no point does anyone stand up and make better choices.
The truly alarming part is that Descending doesn't sound triumphant. It sounds familiar. Like everybody involved has done this before.
Repeatedly.
Enough times that no explanation is required.
The spider spent an entire song teaching the route.
Now everybody knows where it goes.
This does not strike me as progress.
