The Madwoman
“Every once in a while something changes, and she’s changing me.”
That’s how I knew. Not because I figured it out. Because it was already different before I could name it. It landed wrong. It stayed longer. It didn’t leave when it was supposed to. That’s not nothing. That’s not noise. That’s something getting in and not letting go.
“I am altered.” Yeah, you think? You don’t carry something like that and stay where you were. You don’t hear it like that and still belong to whatever you were before it touched you. Everything sits closer now. Everything feels like it’s already inside me instead of happening somewhere else.
“I see in a different light the objects of my desire.” Good. Let it change the way it looks. Let it ruin the distance. Let it take whatever I thought I wanted and make it something I can’t step back from.
“I’m caught up in her design.” Yes. That’s what it feels like when it fits too well to ignore. It finds the places that were already open and pulls them wider. It doesn’t ask if I agree. It just holds. You don’t argue with something that already knows where to land.
He wants to talk about chemistry. He wants to name it, break it down, make it make sense.
I don’t need it to make sense.
I can feel it coming apart.
Not breaking.
Not snapping.
Just… loosening.
Like whatever held me together is giving way and I don’t have to fight it.
I don’t even want to.
“I am altered.” That’s not something I decided. That’s what’s left after it’s done with me.
The Scholar
“Every once in a while something changes, and she’s changing me.” A change in input is observed. A change in self is inferred. The inference is unverified.
“I am altered.” The statement treats subjective variance as structural transformation. Response is mistaken for identity.
“It’s too late for me now.” Irreversibility is asserted without demonstration. No prior state is defined. No threshold is established. The conclusion precedes the evidence.
“I see in a different light the objects of my desire.” Perceptual shift is acknowledged. Causation is misassigned. The subject resists categorization. Instability follows. The instability is resolved by redefining the self.
This is not transformation.
It is compensation.
The Witness
Look at the order.
Something changes. Then you change.
Not: I changed.
That difference matters.
You’re not watching yourself become something else. You’re reacting to something you can’t place.
“Caught between black and white. Not quite either day or night.”
You hear that and you try to settle it. You try to decide what it is. But it doesn’t land anywhere clean, so nothing holds.
Now watch what happens next.
“I see in a different light the objects of my desire.”
Of course you do.
If you can’t fix the subject, you adjust yourself instead. It’s the only thing left that feels stable.
“I’m caught up in her design.”
That’s where it slips. That doesn’t sound like recognition. It sounds like you’ve stopped separating what’s happening from what you are. And once that line goes—
“I am altered.”
What are you comparing that to? You don’t have a before anymore. You don’t have anything to measure it against. So it feels like change.
But all you really lost was the place you were standing when you tried to name it.
